I just had a meeting with a young attorney seeking work. He was dressed in a hoodie and behind him was a living room, that was in need of a serious cleaning.
I've seen this with candidates, clients and vendors.
A lot of people have let themselves go and developed what I call COVID Business Habits.
I took our firm virtual years ago, so I'm used to working from home. However, it's obvious a lot of people are really not adapting well to their new work situation!
Here are a couple of quick tips for breaking those COVID Habits:
1. Prior to COVID, did you meet clients and colleagues in a nice office? At nice restaurants? Where do your potential clients, clients and colleagues see you now?
If you're in a role that will probably not be returning to the Brick & Mortar after COVID, it's definitely time to invest in your Dream Home Office (see mine above). Even if you might be returning to the old office, at least create a work / video area with a solid backdrop (bookshelves, fine art etc.) for meetings. Create a solid business environment.
2. Did you wear a suit and tie to business meetings, prior to COVID? Nice blouse or button down shirt? What are you wearing now? Jammies? T-shirts? Sweatshirts? Oops.
While I don't necessarily recommend a full suit & tie (unless like me, you're completely comfortable in such attire - even at home), the key is simple: Don't let yourself go. If you've let yourself slip, it's time to groom well and dress well again.
You'll feel better and you'll be more effective at work!
Remember Dr. Robert Schuller's saying: Tough times never last but tough people do.
We'll get through this. Things will go back to normal. In the meantime, we need to develop and maintain the best habits, we can.
